Lika and Senj County

The base of the Lika and Senj county is a relatively sparsely populated basin with an string of small fields criss-crossed by underground streams, high mountains and the Pag island coastal area. The continental areas represent the homes of game, mostly bears on the ground and eagles in the skies.

Mount Velebit represents one of the most interesting natural beauties of the region, the mountain harbouring an array of endemic species and underground natural phenomena (Cerovacke pecine). Velebit is also the most important Croatian mountain, as it protects the region from the influx of cold continental climate into the Adriatic. The well-known bora wind is created right there. Velebit has been awarded an international scientific award - the UNESCO charter in 1978, making it a member of the international network of biosphere reserves.

The Plitvicka jezera national park have also been included in the world natural heritage list put together by UNESCO. It is made up of 16 lakes linked by falls that biogenetically created Travertine barriers. The high altitude and the climate barrier created by mount Velebit secure a fresh mountainous climate in the whole of Lika with very cold winters and lots of snow. The most important archaeological site in the county is the one situated near Novalja. It is a Roman waterworks dating from the first century and the remnants of three early Christian basilicas and a reliquary from the 4th century.

The town of Senj, old Senia, is the oldest town in the Primorje region and is well known for its warriors "Senjski uskoci' who used to fight hard against the Turks and Venetians in the 16th century. The Nehaj fort derives from the same era. The county had undergone war destruction during the Homeland war. The estimated cost of the damage in Lika and Senj county and it's capital Gospic is some 1.2 million kuna and it will take a long time for it to be fully reconstructed.
