Ambroz Matija Gubec was the
leader of the peasant revolt in Croatia and Slovenia.
He led a peasant army of about
6,000 men, which was defeated on February 9, 1573.
According to legend, Gubec was crowned with a hot iron crown in St. Mark's Square in Zagreb as the
"peasant king" after which he was quartered.
