Description
Karlovac was founded in the latter half of the 16th century as a defense fortress against Ottoman Turks. In the 18th century the Habsburg Empress Maria Therese, inclined to enlightenment, sent Piarist priests, considered to be the best teachers on the European Continent, to Karlovac. It was in this way that in 1765 today's Gimnazija Karlovac (Karlovac's Grammar School) started its work.
