The Ombudsman is a commissioner of the Parliament (elected for a term of eight years), who protects the constitutional and legal rights of citizens in proceedings before the state administration and bodies vested with public authority. The Ombudsman is also entitled to protect the rights of citizens before local and regional self-government bodies as well to protect the local and regional self-government before the central authorities.
The Ombudsman reviews individual cases where the rights of citizens are infringed or threatened by state bodies. The Ombudsman submits an annual Report to the Parliament; the Parliament’s conclusions on the Report oblige the Government to submit a report on the measures taken to remove the causes of the violations of rights.
